Kia EV Charging Guide

Kia EV Charging
Kia EV charging is easier than ever thanks to expanding public networks and advanced home charging solutions. At Casey Kia, our goal is to help you understand your options so you can keep your EV powered and ready to go. Let’s take a closer look at the essentials.

Charging Levels

There are three options to charge an electric vehicle like the Kia EV9:

  • Level 1 – A Level 1 charging cable can be plugged into a standard household 120V outlet. Level 1 charging typically adds up to five miles of range per hour.
  • Level 2 – Level 2 charging can be done at a professionally-installed at-home charging station or a public charging station. The 240V charging usually adds about 30 miles of range every hour.
  • Level 3 – Also known as DC fast charging, Level 3 charging can only be done at select public charging stations. It ranges from 400-800 volts and can typically increase your charge to 80 percent in less than half an hour.

Charging at Home

You need to consider what type of charging works best for you to determine what kind of charger you need. A typical Level 1 outlet charger comes with your Kia EV and is helpful when no other options are available, but it’s not ideal for frequent drivers or long commutes because it charges so slowly. There’s an added cost to purchase and professionally install a Level 2 charger at home, but many drivers like the convenience of charging their EV while they sleep.

Charging On-the-Go

Due to our expanding network, it’s easier than ever to charge Kia EVs on the go. Kia EV owners will soon have access to over 18,000 Tesla Supercharger® stations, nearly doubling the number of available DC fast chargers nationwide. While they aren’t as fast, there are also several Level 2 public charging stations available, which you can quickly locate using your Kia app or navigation system.

Kia Charge Pass®

You can simplify the charging process with Kia Charge Pass®, which is a free feature that’s part of Kia Connect®. It provides access to thousands of public charging stations across the nation. You can use it to start charging sessions at compatible public charging stations, plan your routes, and more. You can even add a credit card on file in your Kia Access App to pay for charging sessions through the feature.

Preserving Your Charge

There are steps you can take to preserve your charge and help it last longer. For starters, it’s important to limit any strains on your battery, such as harsh driving, carrying heavy loads, or not properly maintaining your vehicle. Try to limit letting your charge fall below 10 percent, but try to avoid charging over 80 percent too.
