By May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings. At Casey Kia, we want to make sure our Virginia customers are informed, prepared, and ready for the transition. After all, your next DMV visit may be closer than you think.

What is a REAL ID?

A REAL ID is a new identification card designed to enhance security. It can serve as your primary form of identification, such as when you’re driving. In some instances, it will now be a mandatory form of identification.

Do I Have to Get a REAL ID?

The state of Virginia does not require you to obtain a REAL ID. You can continue using your existing driver’s license when driving. However, you will need a REAL ID to:

• Fly domestically within the U.S. using a state-issued ID
• Visit secure federal sites like military bases or nuclear facilities
• Enter certain federal courthouses or administrative offices

How Do I Get a REAL ID?

You can apply for a REAL ID directly at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or by using the online application. Once you’ve completed the application, you’ll need to bring the required documentation to the DMV (which must be originals), including:

• Proof of identity
• Two proofs of Virginia residency
• One proof of legal presence (birth certificate, passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card)
• Proof of your Social Security number

What’s the Difference between a Regular Driver’s License and a REAL ID?

The main difference between a traditional driver’s license and a REAL ID is the access that they give you. You can still use your traditional license to drive, vote, and verify your identity. You will need the REAL ID to board flights and access select federal facilities and military bases.

What if I Don’t Get a REAL ID?

You won’t need a REAL ID, unless you are flying or trying to access one of the aforementioned facilities. However, there are other TSA-approved forms of identification that you can use when flying, such as your U.S. passport. Federal facilities and military bases may have their own requirements. Getting your REAL ID early helps you avoid the rush and stay travel-ready without stress.
