When orders come through for a Permanent Change of Station (PCS), there’s a lot to organize, and your Kia lease or loan is part of that checklist. At Casey Kia in Newport News, we provide clarity and support for our military customers facing a PCS. Here’s what you need to know before you make your next move.

Keeping Your Loan or Lease

With the convenience of online payment plans, it’s possible to keep your current loan or lease exactly as it is. However, if you have a lease, you’ll need to double-check that your leasing company allows you to return your lease to any dealership. Otherwise, you’ll need to arrange to bring your vehicle back at the end of your lease.

Moving Out of the Country

There are several additional factors to consider if you’re being relocated out of the country. For starters, most lease agreements restrict you from taking your vehicle outside of the continental United States. You also need to consider the destination country’s import restrictions and any safety or emissions requirements that they may have, as well as look into any permits or customs declarations you will need.

Terminating Your Loan

Naturally, there are many things to consider, including the costs involved when transferring your vehicle. Luckily, there are protections available for military personnel that allow you to terminate a lease without an early termination fee or penalties. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) was initially designed to protect military personnel from financial and legal burdens during active duty, particularly if they are stationed overseas.

Choosing Which Option is Right for You

We know there are already so many things to consider when uprooting your life and family to a new location. We don’t want your vehicle to be a cause for concern. We encourage you to visit our team about your options to see which is right for you. There are many reasons to keep your vehicle, such as the convenience and positive equity you’ve built up, but plenty of reasons to return it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I return my leased Kia if I’m deployed overseas?

If your overseas deployment is for more than 180 days, federal law gives you the right to terminate your lease under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). Documentation will be required.

Will my lease be affected if I’m transferred to another state?

No special termination protections exist under SCRA for moves within the U.S. However, you can contact your leasing provider to discuss options like lease transfers or buyouts.

Am I able to walk away from my loan due to a PCS?

No, a PCS does not eliminate your responsibility to repay an auto loan. If continuing payments isn’t feasible, consider selling or shipping the vehicle.

What paperwork is needed to end a lease because of a PCS?

You’ll need to present official deployment or PCS orders, plus any additional forms required by your leasing company. Our team can guide you through it.

Do you help with lease returns or selling my car?

Definitely. If you’re relocating, we can walk you through your return options or assist with trade-ins and sales to simplify the process.
